Igniting the passion for the music inside you

1452 Foundry is the compass that keeps you on course to reaching your highest aspirations as an ever-evolving musician.

You want to play, we can help.

If you have a child that shows a desire to play music, foster that desire. Guiding that music to come out may very well be the best thing you’ve ever done for them. Studying music is proven to enhance a child’s academic abilities, cultivate social skills, discipline and patience, boost self-esteem and opens a window for them into other cultures.

Are you a beginning student who doesn’t know where to start? Have you hit a plateau with your instrument and aren’t sure how to move past and through that plateau so you can advance? As adults, we often feel it’s too late to become the musician we’ve always wanted to be. It is never too late. You can start right here, right now and make that instrument come alive!

Advanced Players

Every musician comes to a point in their journey where they want to go deeper, understand more fully, the magnitude of their instrument and the music itself. To work with a mentor regarding the ‘hows and whys’ of music theory and technique will propel you into a new level of mastery and creative impact. You will have more confidence, more creative options and up your overall fluency in the language of music.

So You Want To Be a Better Player?

Learning music on your own or through YouTube videos can lead to poor form, slow progress, and bad technique that can cause chronic injury. We don’t know what we don’t know. Teaching ourselves can lend itself to huge gaps in our knowledge and ability to play.

What Is IT That We Want As Musicians?

• To express ourselves fully

• Take pride in our skill and creativity

• To be confident and dynamic

• Interact with other musicians

• To communicate with, and impact our audience

In order to reach these goals, we need the guidance and mentoring from a skilled and dedicated teacher who not only understands the importance of your ambitions, but who has also ‘been there’ traversing every road a musician walks down.

Maybe you’ve been reluctant to work with a teacher.

We Understand.

All too often, a typical music lesson goes like this: A student drives to the teacher’s studio. They’re super excited to be learning their favorite Justin Bieber song (ugh… or Steve Vai solo!) and are met by an unenthusiastic teacher who only wants to teach them the next Bach Cantata from the book they made the student buy. Don’t get me wrong, we love Bach here at 1452 Foundry, but that’s not necessarily what a student wants to learn! In spite of this, you still want lessons.

There must be another way!

You’re right! There is another way! And you have come to the right place! At 1452 Foundry, you can undoubtedly reach your musical goals!

By studying with us, you will get a professional, seasoned musician who understands the drive and passion to learn music. No matter what your style is: rock, pop, jazz, classical, folk, instrumental, or jam bands.

Out of my own desire to learn these styles and techniques, I developed my own method of teaching. One that integrates fun and excitement while teaching the essential aspects of music. My system delivers a well-rounded musical education that allows the student to play freely with confidence and to get out of the way when the creative muse arrives.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

-William Butler Yeats

It is time for your creative spark to ignite!

Students want and need a unique, fresh approach to learning music. It’s my passion to deliver this to you! With my style of teaching, I have discovered that students learn faster, engage deeper, and are inspired to continue exploring their capabilities.

As musicians, We practice technique to get our fingers to go where we want them to go. We practice theory to understand where they can go and why. My method guarantees an eclectic musical education that allows the student to confidently play freely and give room for when that visionary flare lights up inside them!

I balance what a student wants to learn with the necessary tools to succeed as a well-rounded musician.

With the right training you’ll be able to:

• Bask in the fullness of your creative expression

• Play ripping runs at lightning speed

• Connect with other musicians

• Read and translate music

• Have a vocabulary of chords that rivals the grains of sand on the beach!

• Get those songs out of your head and play them out loud

• Develop ear training so you can play the songs you hear on the radio, identify chords, melody and rhythm.

4 Myths That are Preventing You From Being a Better Musician

Studies have been done on what makes the perceivable difference in children learning fasting than adults. It turns out that it only comes down to how much time you spend playing your instrument.

While it is possible (and easier) for your cognitive functions to forge new paths during childhood, that doesn’t mean you can’t learn to play music as an adult. In fact, because of your life experiences, you’ll be able to bring all of that information to the process. According to researchers, music stimulates almost every area of the brain, especially those associated with memory. When used as melodic intonation therapy, it has the power to heal and compensate for damaged areas in the brain. Don’t think that because you’re an adult that you can’t learn music. Music can be learned and played at any age and time in your life. As an adult learner, you can make measured strides and develop a skill that will benefit you for the rest of your life.

Learning music as an adult can actually reduce stress in your life and give you a healthy mental workout that can benefit your physiology. Studies have shown that listening and playing music has the ability to release dopamine, the chemical responsible for a number of positive benefits to the body. It helps to increase your mental focus and improve sleep patterns.

There are many studies that prove the regenerating power of music, as related to cognitive health and the effect it can have on improving your mood and memory.

1+1 = 2, 2 x 4 = 8 (not so difficult after all!)

While music theory does involve “working things out” (like a typical math problem), it is best to approach it by “how things work.”

Many people have the impression that music theory is all about making calculations. What it’s really all about it is seeing just how big the preverbal universe is, and our place within it.

Music theory explains the reason behind the beauty of the melodies and harmonies you are hearing, or playing on your instrument.

The truth is, you don’t. Regular, focused practice is necessary if you want to learn quickly and effectively, but it’s vital to take breaks for the regeneration of your muscles and brain. Pursuing other activities and creative endeavors can be just the right ingredient you need to stay motivated and excited. You might want to skip your practice from time to time. A few days break can be a time of allowing your muscle memory to kick in and integrate what you’ve learned.

Practice can include many variations. Just listening to music can be a practice. Listening to what you’re hearing in a whole new way. Breathing and stretching and taking care of your body is part of our practice as musicians. It keeps us supple, flexible, strong and sends oxygen to all the right places. Studying music is not meant to be a chore. It is to enhance the quality of your well- being and creativity.

About Our Instructor

Dorian Britton

Dorian Britton

At two years old, I discovered the piano and began to play. This was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with everything ‘music.’ My passion for the piano set in motion an insatiable thirst to know and understand its nature, how it impacts the world and how music crosses all language barriers into a world of universal communication. I learned the cello, bass, guitar, drums, violin, and my own voice as a musical instrument. I studied fervently, the history of music, theory and the methods to use to achieve musical goals, both technically and creatively. I learned many genres and techniques dating back through the Renaissance and the Baroque era, all the way up to modern music. This deep delve has made me who I am today: a nationally recognized composer for film and television, an instrumentalist, a songwriter, an audio engineer, a constant evolving student of the endless realms of musical journeying, and a skilled and dedicated teacher for anyone who dreams of learning music.

What Others are Saying About Us

Our two boys, now 8 and 10 years old, have been taking lessons with Dorian now for about 3 years. First, we did face to face lessons in a studio, now we do online lessons and are quite pleased with their progress. They are learning to think and act like musicians.

Anyone can teach a kid to play a song. Dorian, however, goes much further in his approach to teaching. The kids develop the mindset of a musician. He teaches them to respect their instruments and take care of them. He also pushes the kids to grow and try more complex tasks. When he has them put all these tasks together, where they once were just playing notes, now they are playing music. Their eyes light up when they see how it all comes together, and they want to work to improve even more.

Another area we’ve been impressed with is his ability to senses when our kids’ moods are not conducive to learning, and he works with that to bring fun and levity back into the lessons. He impresses upon them, and us as parents, that the learning experience should be enjoyable.

Oh, and if you haven’t heard about his Rock Band Camp, check it out! Our kids went this past summer and it truly upped their game and opened their eyes to what it is like to be part of a band. We hope to do it again if offered.

Overall, Dorian and 1452 Foundry offer a unique learning environment for future musicians. We have been very pleased with our kids’ progress over the last couple of years.

Karl G.

Dorian is an exceptional musician and teacher. He has the personality and skills to keep kids focused and excited about learning. Our 8 year old daughter is one of Dorian’s students. We are very pleased with our daughter’s progress and I love hearing the high level of fun she and Dorian have, during guitar lessons. Dorian’s professional style is very approachable and I would recommend him for kids or adults.

Tracy K.

I have been taking lessons from Dorian since January and I am so impressed! He is extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of music that I want to study. He is also very patient and able to explain things in a way that is easy to understand. I highly recommend him if you truly want to be successful.
